DHIS2 Overview

Terminologies and concepts

Aggregate

Aggregated data is a consolidation of data combined from several measurements. In the context of DHIS2 we, for example, have patient data that relates to a single patient. We also have aggregated data that relates to multiple patients and that cannot be traced back to a specific patient.

Typically, the routine data that a health facility deals with is this kind of aggregated statistics, and is used for the generation of routine reports and indicators, and most importantly, strategic planning within the health system. Aggregate data cannot provide the type of detailed information which patient level data can, but is crucial for planning and guidance of the performance of health systems.

Data element

Data elements form the basis of DHIS2. Data elements define what is actually recorded in system, e.g. number of immunisations or number of cases of malaria. In other words, a data element is one bit of data that should be collected and used for analysis. For example the number of BCG vaccine doses given.

Data set

A data set is a collection of data elements, together forming one reporting form. For example "Child Health", which contains a variety of data elements related to this aspect. Data Sets are what the health workers see as forms to be submitted in DHIS2 on a routine basis.

DHIS2

DHIS is an open source software platform for reporting, analysis and dissemination of data for all health programs, developed by the Health Information Systems Programme.

DHIS2 application platform

The DHIS2 application platform provides all of the common components and tools that we need to create DHIS2 applications. It gives developers a zero-configuration, fully-featured DHIS2 app and let them customize it from there.

DHIS2 core

DHIS2 core is the generic core of entire DHIS2 system. It provides a data model and services through an exposed RESTful Web API.

DHIS2 bundled apps

Bundled apps are DHIS2 web apps bundled along with the core and are made in-house by developers in the HISP group. These apps are often thoroughly tested and adhere to DHIS2's design system guidelines.

DHIS2 third-party apps

Third-party apps, or custom apps, can be made by anyone and there is a high potential for user involvement. These apps can, for example, be tailored to specific district or clinic needs.

DHIS2 UI

DHIS2 UI consists of a collection of reusable React components that follow a common design system.

HISP

HISP is a global movement to strengthen Health Information Systems in Developing countries. They design, implement and sustain Health Information Systems following a participatory approach. Their core aim is to support local management of health care delivery and information flows in selected health facilities, districts, and provinces, and its further spread within and across developing countries.

Indicator

An indicator is a combined element of two or more data elements, that together provide meaning. For example, by combining the number of BCG vaccine doses given within a month, and the estimated population in that area.

Organisation Unit (org unit)

An organisation unit represents a facility / district / region / country (the where) .

Period

A period is the when for a collected piece of data.
